Thank you Erin and your team for all of your hard work. The beauty from your endless toil is inspiring. Where do you get your energy?

I have never met a sunflower that I didn’t like :) But, there are two types of sunflowers that bring me the most joy.

The first type is the rogue seed that overwinters in random spots in the garden that sprout in the springtime. These seedlings are always weeks ahead of my own thoughtful plantings. I laugh at myself. They remind me that seeds kind of do their own thing despite my planning and cultivation routines that I take too seriously. I used to pull these babies out when I first started gardening. Now I’ve learned they are one of my favorites to let go and enjoy the show.

The second type of sunflower that I enjoy are the ones that attract birds when going to seed. Bigger sunflower varieties (large single stem seed heads like Mammoth and tall branching varieties like Autumn Beauty) are the best! In late summer/early fall I look forward to the Tufted Titmouse with it’s cute crested cap showing up to dine on these sunflowers. The display is quite entertaining and always puts a smile on my face.

I’m hoping to grow some Frilly this year for cutting bouquets.

Happy New Year!

Now, given that with sunflowers they need to be as close as 4 to 6 inches apart, do you still use weed barrier or landscape fabric in those fields or does that closeness make it too difficult?

A tornado came through our town (Gaylord, MI) and ripped up 40+ Cedar, Pine and Birch trees in my yard. Where I had lots of shade and couldn’t even grow grass, I now had lots of sunlight once we cleared all the downed trees. Very sad though. As the summer progress, we noticed random sunflowers growing! What a delightful surprise! They are my daughter’s favorite flower. Well, we cut them and shared them with friends and family. I didn’t plant any this spring, but, lo and behold, there are some growing again this year! Instead of being scattered around the yard like last year, this year they are ringed around a few of the new trees I planted. Walking outside now makes me smile again!

The ProCut sunflower varieties are pollenless if you want to try those next time.

You might be able to get sunflowers in June if you started them now but Black Eyed Susans can take around 100-120 days to mature so they will be ready for harvest later in the summer. I’m not sure about the others though.

I live in the Santa Cruz mountains on the SF peninsula in California. Would it be possible to have sunflowers, lazy susans from seed by then if I start seeds indoors now? Or will I need to get these from a florist? I see coriopsis won’t flower from seed till second year – is this true?

Next question is that I fell in love with a flower I saw in Switzerland – blue globe thistle or Echinops bannaticus. I got some seeds last year but not a one grew. Would it be possible to get flowers from this plant by mid June?

Thank you

The Pro Cut series are non-branching so don’t pinch those ones. Pinching information can be found on the description pages for each variety in our Shop.

Question.. are all the sunflowers in this article branching? Are there any that are single stem and cannot be pinched? I got the Greenburst, Ruby Eclipse, and pro cut red seed varieties from you guys and want to make sure I don’t pinch any that are single stem! Haha!
